Welcome, I'm Laini McArdle, a registered psychologist and the founder of 6 Minds Psychology. I am passionate about providing access to treatment for individuals and families affected by eating disorders, disordered eating, and concerns related to body image, shape, and weight. My approach is grounded in compassion and guided by evidence-based treatments, with a strong emphasis on early detection and intervention.
My aim is to provide accessible, high quality psychological treatment and psychoeducation aligned with current gold standard guidelines and the latest research. I endeavour to provide friendly, warm and genuine care, fostering a collaborative and safe space for my clients.
I work with all eating disorders across the lifespan, particularly in adolescents and young adults.
Evidence-based treatments offered for eating disorders:
Areas of expertise outside eating disorders:
Comprehensive psychological assessment and treatment for eating disorders, disordered eating, as well as, shape and weight concerns pre and post bariatric surgery. This aids to enhance readiness and optimal surgery outcomes to minimise complications, while also addressing significant identity shifts that may follow major weight loss.
Evidence based treatments for all types of eating disorders with the aim of reducing medical risk (e.g., starvation syndrome, refeeding syndrome) while addressing restriction, binge eating, compensatory behaviours, sensory issues, and fear aversions.
Evidence based treatments for disordered eating that may not meet criteria for an eating disorder but which still significantly impact quality of life and wellbeing. This can include yoyo dieting, irregular eating, meal skipping, "clean" eating, and rigid food rules.
Addressing fears and distress around the number on the scale. Targeting poor body image and working on a more self-accepting body image. This includes self-esteem work and confidence building.
EMDR is a type of psychological treatment that helps individuals process and heal from painful or traumatic memories. This helps your brain process the memory in an adaptive way, so it no longer feels as upsetting. You still remember it, but it stops bothering you as much.
EMDR works by having you briefly focus on your painful or traumatic memories one at a time, while following side-to-side movements as guided by your psychologist with your eyes (or using tapping or sounds).
EMDR is an evidence based treatment for PTSD, and can also be effectively used alongside other psychological treatments to address a range of mental conditions which involve a history of traumatic experiences or events.
The 6 Minds Psychology Educate Program is dedicated to empowering allied health professionals, clinics, and schools with the knowledge and tools to identify, respond to and manage eating disorders effectively. As early intervention is proven to significantly improve treatment outcomes for eating disorders, our training aids in identifying and acting on early warning signs.
Our program is developed by highly trained eating disorder specialised health professionals with the aim to bridge the critical gap in eating disorder education and awareness in community and health care settings.
